Although chemical stripper is unavoidable for some paint removing jobs there is a great alternative for small solid brass items such as handles, pulls, door plates and hinges.
Fill an old, expendable pot with water and add a cup of ammonia. Place your brass fittings inside the pot and boil for fifteen to twenty minutes. It’s a very smelly process and is best done outside on an old hot plate if you can.
When done fish your items out with some old tongs and use an awl or wooden skewer to pick the paint out of any nooks and crannies.
Rinse the pieces thoroughly and dry in the oven on low heat.
Works like a charm!
